WHY REACTOR COOLING IS CRITICAL

Chemical reactors — including batch reactors, continuous stirred-tank reactors (CSTRs), and plug-flow reactors — often run exothermic reactions that release large amounts of heat. Without adequate cooling, reactor temperatures can rise uncontrollably, leading to thermal runaway, degraded product quality, dangerous pressure buildup, or even catastrophic failure. Precise reactor cooling is not just a process requirement — it is a safety imperative.

A reactor chiller circulates coolant through the reactor jacket, coils, or external heat exchanger to remove excess heat and hold the reaction at its target temperature. North Slope Chillers builds systems with the cooling capacity, reliability, and temperature stability that chemical and pharmaceutical operations demand.

HOW REACTOR CHILLERS WORK

Reactor cooling systems typically use a glycol-water mixture as the heat transfer fluid. The chiller cools this fluid and pumps it through the reactor's jacket or internal coils. As the fluid absorbs heat from the exothermic reaction, it returns to the chiller, where the heat is rejected and the fluid is cooled again for recirculation. This closed-loop process maintains a stable reaction temperature regardless of how much heat the reaction produces.

For processes that require sub-ambient or sub-zero temperatures, North Slope Chillers' Deep Freeze series can cool reactor fluids down to -20°F, making them ideal for low-temperature crystallization, cryogenic reactions, and specialty chemical synthesis. Our systems are designed for continuous 24/7 operation with minimal maintenance.

REACTOR COOLING SOLUTIONS FROM NORTH SLOPE CHILLERS

North Slope Chillers offers reactor cooling solutions ranging from 2-ton units for pilot-scale reactors to 10-ton systems for full-production vessels. Our Deep Freeze outdoor models are built for chemical plants where the chiller must be installed outside near the reactor, with weather-resistant enclosures and corrosion-resistant components.

Every reactor chiller we build features digital temperature controls, high-flow pumps, and robust construction rated for the demanding environments found in chemical plants, pharmaceutical facilities, and specialty manufacturing operations.
